We started our company, Synergy Carbon, in 2008. Our CEO, Steve Piro, who is passionate about the environment, wanted to make a difference in the new country he called home, Indonesia. He created a company that was primarily focused on carbon mitigation. The company grew, and two years later, we realized there was a large demand for promoting energy efficiency in the buildings of Indonesia.
We shifted gears and focused more on what we could do to reduce the energy usage in buildings to save our clients money. Later in 2010 we got our first energy efficiency contract with the Kompas Gramedia Group, which, over time, has proven to be one of our leading clients.
We didn’t stop there though. We kept our momentum going, and in 2011, we became the lead energy efficiency consultant for Universitas Multimedia Nusantara, which won two prestigous distinctions: Most Energy-Efficient Building in Southeast Asia from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and Most Energy-Efficient Building in Indonesia from the Indonesian Ministry of Energy (ESDM).
We kept dreaming big, and two years later, in 2013, we became the lead energy efficiency consultant for the Indonesian Convention Exhibition (ICE) building, the largest convention center in Southeast Asia.
At this point, we realized that the majority of the work we were doing was no longer carbon mitigation, so we needed a new name. We rebranded the company as Synergy Efficiency Solutions and never looked back.
We continued to expand, and in 2014, we were the first energy service company (ESCO) to sign a multi-scope energy savings performance contract (ESPC) in Indonesia. Shortly thereafter, we began to attract lots of positive attention, and later that year, we were featured in the Huffington Post as one of Bali’s top 10 hottest startups, as well as being featured on Google’s Startup Grind.
With each ESPC project that we have taken on, we’ve continued to grow our expertise as the leading ESCO in the region, and in 2015, we were privileged to collaborate with the ESDM to develop ESCO law No.14/2016. The following year, in 2016, we won the CTI PFAN Clean Energy Business Forum, with an $11 million dollar ask to finance our ESPC project portfolio.
We have worked tirelessly throughout the years, providing our clients with the utmost attention and the best solutions to fit their needs, and in 2016, we completed our 100th energy efficiency project. Furthermore, in 2016, we were privileged to join the Endeavor Entrepreneur Network, to which only 3 percent of entrepreneurs worldwide that apply are accepted. We are energized and excited to leverage a powerful international network to sustain our growth.
Through the whole journey, we have held closely to our core principles, which are that every project we take on should challenge the status quo, and every project should move energy efficiency one step closer to being a mainstream practice in the region.
